9 Fun Facts about Mickey’s Mix Magic Projection Show at the Disneyland Resort

January 25, 2019 By Daniel Hale

“Mickey’s Mix Magic” debuts at the Disneyland Resort as part of Get Your Ears On – A Mickey and Minnie Celebration, the biggest party for the legendary duo in Disneyland history.

“Mickey’s Mix Magic” is a new high-energy projection show celebrating the one and only Mickey Mouse. The nightly extravaganza creates a family-fun dance party throughout the park with “DJ” Mickey spinning the new celebration song, “It’s a Good Time” along with new, fun takes on favorite Disney songs. On select nights, “Mickey’s Mix Magic” is enhanced with the addition of fireworks.

Here are 9 fun facts:

  • The new celebration song “It’s a Good Time” was written and produced specifically for the “World’s Biggest Mouse Party” that is underway at Disney Parks around the world, celebrating 90 years of magic with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.
  • Guests will also dance and sing along to these tunes during “Mickey’s Mix Magic”: “I Wanna Be Like You” (The Jungle Book), “Ev’rybody Wants to Be a Cat” (The Aristocats), “Friend Like Me” (Aladdin), “Grim Grinning Ghosts” (theme song from The Haunted Mansion attraction), “Un Poco Loco” (Coco) and “Let It Go” (Frozen).
  • The musical score of “Mickey’s Mix Magic” is inspired by the irresistible beat of “house music,” bringing energy and fun that appeals to the whole family.
  • The multi-speaker audio design in “Mickey’s Mix Magic” supports the “dance party” feel of the show throughout the park, immersing guests in surround sound.
  • Each viewing area in the park – Main Street, U.S.A., the façade of “it’s a small world” and the water screens of the Rivers of America (when “Fantasmic!” returns in March)– has a custom projection design, which makes for a unique show experience wherever guests are.
  • More than two dozen video projectors bring “Mickey’s Mix Magic” to life throughout the park, and 14 of those are on Main Street, U.S.A., alone.
  • Nearly 100 special lighting fixtures are utilized throughout the show, and they sit atop 10 different rooftops throughout the park.
  • Disney Parks Live Entertainment collaborated with the team behind the latest Mickey animated shorts to bring the youthful, playful and mischievous personality of Mickey Mouse to the show. Minnie Mouse is also featured, showing off some of her dance moves from the pair’s popular international cartoon adventures.
  • Much of the mapped video projection of “Mickey’s Mix Magic” is original content. Instead of cinematic scenes, favorite Disney characters are creatively showcased amidst kaleidoscopic patterns that move with the music beat.

Scare LA Brings Halloween to the Pasadena Convention Center

August 15, 2015 By Daniel Hale

As the third year of ScareLA comes to a close we are so excited for Halloween season 2015!

ScareLADaniel_045

The two day convention switched venues this year moving from downtown Los Angeles to a much more spacious location at the Pasadena Convention Center which welcomed over 10,000 fans. There was something for everyone including panels from the largest haunts in the industry including Universal Halloween Horror Nights, Knott’s Scary Farm and Queen Mary Dark Harbor. In addition to the panels there were seminars, classes, recreated home haunts and over 200 vendors covering all aspects of horror and Halloween. There was so much to see and do that it couldn’t all be done in one day.

Highlights

Mini Haunts
Home haunts were spotlighted (blacklighted) in their own area this year which was a nice touch. Each maze gave you a small taste of what their full haunt would be like. Each mini maze was able to use lighting effects and the darkness to their advantage. Much spookier than last year when they were sprinkled around the brightly lit show floor. There were even monsters wandering around in the dark scaring people as they were queued in line. The mini mazes included Field of Screams Haunted Stadium Exorcism, Spooky Hollow’s “Legends of the Swamp”, The Curse of the Devil Swamp, Drunken Devil Production’s “Hells Bells”, Fear Station’s “The Birth of the Windigo” and Figment Foundry’s “Goblin Underground”.

Classes
A huge part of ScareLA are the Scare Student classes. There were over 50 classes and seminars that covered everything from creating your own haunt soundtrack, prosthetics making, costume making, tombstone design, how to turn your home haunt into a business and everything inbetween.

91 Reasons live podcast
If you are a fan of 80s and 90s pop culture then you should be listening to Jeff Tucker’s 91 Reasons podcast. Jeff, the Director of Entertainment at Knott’s Berry Farm, has taken his love of retro pop culture and walks down memory lane with each episode. His live panel was both entertaining and horrific as he reminisced about growing up in Southern California and told a spine chilling story about his brush with a serial killer. Then, of course, there’s Don Burg. That alone would scare anyone.

Hatbox Ghost Panel
For any true Disneyland fan, the hatbox ghost returning to the Haunted Mansion was a long overdue homecoming. Legendary imagineer Tony Baxter was present along with current imagineer Daniel Joseph to talk about the history of this iconic character. The panel was rounded out with popular Disney artists, Kevin Kidney and Jody Daily and moderated by the Season Pass Podcast, Doug Barnes. They took the audience on a rare tour of the history of the Hatbox Ghost, why it disappeared and how it made its long awaited return to the Haunted Mansion. Episode 105 of the DisGeek Podcast contains the audio from this panel.

Universal Halloween Horror Nights
Universal Halloween Horror Nights filled the 750 seat hall and treated the audience to news that Michael Myers will be returning for 2015 with a maze completely inspired by John Carpenter’s version of this terrifying tale. Read more about it here.

Knott’s Scary Farm
Knott’s Scary Farm teased the standing room only crowd with what they had in store for their 2015 season. They will be doing a first-of-its-kind bright maze that is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of the Snow Queen with a horrific twist. They were quick to say it had no connection to the ice princess that lives down the road. In addition, they will be launching new children’s themed entertainment with Knott’s Spooky Farm for the little ones. And then of course.. Elvira.

Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor
The dark horse in the SoCal haunting land had the crowd screaming in delight as they announced their plans for the 2015 season. The Ringmaster was back to walk would be victims through the concepts of new mazes and the bigger and better freakshow and circus. What better place to spend Halloween than a historic ship that is filled with scary stories based on real events and real guests who still roam the ship after meeting their demise on this haunted vessel.

QueenMaryDarkHarbor

There was so much to see that we could not cover every single thing but we were very impressed by what we experienced with ScareLA this year. The future for this convention will be anything but dark.

Tahitian Terrace Diamond Luau Review

August 13, 2015 By Jae Brattain

Tahitian Terrace Sign

Aloha! When I first heard about the Tahitian Terrace Diamond Luau, my immediate reaction was happiness and excitement. However, upon seeing how much it cost for admission ($150 per person!), my heart sank a little. On one hand, I wanted to participate in a once-in-a-lifetime event that brought back childhood memories. My father had a deep affinity for Hawaii and the Pacific Island culture. As such, we went to the original Tahitian Terrace restaurant at Disneyland during the 1980s. At the same time, I wasn’t sure if it was worth high price. In the end, my heart won over my wallet.

Tahitian Terrace Entrance

This event is part of the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration. It included food inspired by the original Tahitian Terrace restaurant menu, drinks, a Polynesian revue and special merchandise. There were four opportunities to see the show: August 10-11, 5pm and 7:30pm. I went to the 5pm show on August 11th.

Tahitian Terrace Table Decor

At first, there was a bit of confusion on my part. Last year, I went to the Mahaloween event that took place at Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar. I assumed it would be the same venue. However, they instead created a space in the back corner lawn of the Disneyland Hotel near the Frontier Tower. People did check-in near the Trader Sam’s entrance though.

Tahitian Terrace Check In

Check-in for this event went a lot smoother than Mahaloween. I just showed them my ID and they gave me an envelope with vouchers and a special surprise. The “special surprise” was a plastic kukui nut lei (queue the trombone sound – wah, wah, wah). There were four vouchers included: one for self parking validation, one to purchase two additional Diamond Luau Tiki Mugs, and the final two could be exchanged for a select number of adult beverages.

Tahitian Terrace Kukui Nuts

The line getting into the venue was not bad. A little before 5pm, cast members let in guests and were greeted immediately with a tray full of non-alcoholic beverages. There were two choices, one was the original Tahitian Terrace punch and I forgot the second one (I was excited for the punch!). One thing I noticed upon entering was the mixed sizes of tables. Instead of packing everyone together at large rounds, there were more intimate settings for couples and families of four.

Tahitian Terrace Venue

Tahitian Terrace Crowd

Another great thing was the inclusion of two bars and two buffet stations. My assumption is that Disney learned from the crowded Mahaloween experience of having everyone get food and drinks in a single location.

Tahitian Terrace Cupcakes

Overall, the area was decorated quite nicely. A notable fact was that they procured many rare props from the Oceanic Arts warehouse. For those of you who know anything about Disneyland history, this company provided a lot of the decor in Adventureland. The stage was setup for the Polynesian revue, which took place around 5:30pm.

After grabbing a seat, I proceeded to use one of my adult beverage coupons. To my delight, they had Hinano beer! While not the greatest beer of all time, it did add ambience to the event as it is a drink from Tahiti. Other choices included many standard domestic beers, as well as Kona Big Wave Golden Ale. Two wines were available as well.

Tahitian Terrace Buffet Line

The buffet was opened minutes after arrival and featured “distinctive bites inspired by favorites from the original menu” (per the Disney Parks Blog). This list included Coconut Glazed Shrimp, Meatball with Sweet and Sour Sauce, Polynesian Vegetable Cone, Barbecue Pork Belly Sliders, and, for dessert, Butterscotch Pineapple Coconut cupcakes. I will not go into a details of each dish, but I will say that Disney played a bit fast and loose with the term “inspired by” the original menu. For a comprehensive review of the food, check out my other story here: Tahitian Terrace Diamond Luau Food Review.

About 30-minutes after opening, the Polynesian revue group came on stage. They actually provided two performances with a break in between. I thoroughly enjoyed the show. It brought back a lot of fond memories from my younger days. You can check out the video below to see some of the performance.

In between the two performance segments, an Imagineer gave a video presentation about the history of the Tahitian Terrace. It was about 18-minutes long and chockfull of great photos and stories. I did shoot some video of this presentation (be forewarned it’s not the best visual quality). You can see the awesome vintage pics and hear about the evolution of the Tahitian Terrace restaurant.

At the conclusion the stage performances, guests exiting the venue were presented with a gift bag. It contained a Tahitian Terrace poster, a special edition Tahitian Terrace Tiki Mug, and a recipe card for the original Tahitian Terrace punch. We also had the opportunity to purchase two additional mugs using the voucher from earlier. However, the extras were not special edition versions and slated to be publicly released the following day.

Marcus Gonzalez and Scott Tolleson were on hand to sign their works. Marcus designed the Tiki Mug and Scott was the artist responsible for the poster. Both pieces of art were stunning and will be part of my permanent Disney collection.

So, you may ask, was it worth the $150 price of admission? That’s a tough question. My heart says ‘yes!’ but my bank account says ‘no.’ What I loved most were the Polynesian revue, historical presentation, and artwork. The drinks were okay and I’m glad I got to try the original Tahitian Terrace punch. However, the food was a tad disappointing overall and lacked the variety normally associated with a luau. And, let’s be honest folks, this shindig was really a merchandise event in disguise.

Tahitian Terrace Video Monitor

Nevertheless, in the end, I’m glad I went to the Tahitian Terrace Diamond Luau. Sometimes in life you cannot put a price on memories. In a sense, this event helped me recall the great memories of my father and his love of Hawaii. Mahalo nui and aloha ‘oe.
