Wednesday Photo Challenge Answer: Fixin’ To Do Some FANTASMIC!

November 24, 2011 By Daniel Hale

Every Wednesday we test your DLR knowledge with a photograph taken somewhere in the Disneyland Resort.  Usually I wait a day and give you the answer on Thursday, but seeing as this Thursday is Thanksgiving and I’ll be up early in the morning, then driving to Las Vegas to my in-laws, then cooking the dinner, then eating it and then passing out full of Turkey and other foodie goodness, I’ll just give you the answer now. Here’s tis:

The Sailing ship Columbia is taken out of service because Captain Hook and his pirates commandeer it to perform in Fantasmic!. It’s pretty cool.

First they make sure everyone who sat in front of The Rivers of America are still awake by firing a concussive blast from a cannon (which always gives me a start, even when I know it’s coming).

Hook, Smee, Peter Pan, Wendy, and pirates are running around the deck in this little fight/stunt sequence as the ship makes its pass.

Following the ship is that crocodile the wants to finish off what he started with Capt. Hook’s hand, with the sound of a ticking clock emanating from its tail.

The Steam Ship Mark Twain is also pulled to the sideline to perform in the Fantasmic! finale, piloted by a black and white Mickey Mouse, dressed in attire from Steamboat Willie.

About 50 Disney characters dance on the ship in a ribbon routine. The sequence is accompanied by searchlights, fountains, and pyrotechnics. Pretty awesome stuff.

We had more guesses than usual this time, and everyone was right! Lol!

We’ll have a new one for you next week, so when you’re in the Disneyland Resort (Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, Downtown Disney and all of the Disney hotels), keep your eyes peeled and take in everything.

Wednesday Photo Challenge 11-23-11

November 23, 2011 By Daniel Hale

Every Wednesday I will post a photo and issue a challenge for our readers to answer a question about it. So far we only have a handful of players and someone has always guessed right.

What, are the rest of you chicken? It doesn’t hurt to guess.

No one’s gonna laugh at you if you get it wrong.

Okay, peep this:

It’s night time at Disneyland. The sailing ship Columbia and the Steamboat Mark Twain are both hiding in a dark corner of The Rivers of America. Why?

If you know the answer to this one, or think you know the answer, drop me a line.

You can do this by:

Leaving a comment here (certanly the simplest way)

Send me a direct message on Twitter (@disgeekpaul)

or drop me an e-mail: paul@disgeek.com.

I’ll keep your answers hidden so that more people can guess, therefore YOU will be able to see your answer, but no one else will. I need to keep it going as long as I can and give everyone a fair shot at it.

Tomorrow morning I’ll post the names of players who guessed correctly and reveal a new photo with the correct answer.

Have a great magical, and happy Humpday!

24 Days of MouseVent Begins 12/1/11

November 18, 2011 By Daniel Hale

Press Release: 24 Days of MouseVent Begins 12/1/11

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 17, 2011

MouseVent Celebrates Disney Magic For a Second Year

MouseVent is an unofficial audio advent calendar kicks of 24 days of Christmas magic December 1st, 2011.

Orlando, Florida, November 17, 2011 – MouseVent, an audio Advent calendar, will begin it’s second year of spreading holiday greetings from the Disney fan community for 24 days beginning December 1, 2011. The project is created for the Disney fan community, by the Disney fan community to spread Christmas cheer.

Organizer Alan Hooper wanted to bring the Disney community worldwide for a type of Christmas party. “At a time of festivities I often wondered if it would be possible to bring a wide range of podcasters, musicians and authors together into one place. Individually everyone does a great job in their own field, but it is in only a few small circles that the podcasters join together or help each other out. I set out to create a project that brought established / professional Disney podcasters to the same table as novice brand new ones,” says Hooper. “Last year we saw podcasters rip up their format to create a theatrical production to be different. And Disney employed musician create submissions direct for the MouseVent Project. MouseVent isn’t a commercial venture, everyone that takes part in it receives no financial gain or do I. Again this was to create an even playing field for everyone. Everyone who takes part donates their time and effort and in return receives an acknowledgement in the project. This is another aspect of the project that pushed me along, to find where the Disney Fan community linked together.”

MouseVent a project is created from audio by 24 contributors compiled and published by Alan Hooper. Hooper has worked on developing Disney related fan sites for over a decade. Disney-Links.com, Hiddendlrp.com and HiddenWDW.com are just some of his projects. Hooper’s connection with podcasting came 2 years ago when at a Disney Fan convention in the UK. Hooper says, “I got talking with a couple of fellow Disney fans that did a podcast. After a few hours of chatting we decided to give it a go. Together Chris, Steve and myself host Your MouseCast, a Disney Podcast from a British view point. Then October 27th, 2011 came and I had this idea for an audio advent calendar. Luckily last year was a success and everyone joined in.”

The Calendar is available online at www.mousevent.com. Each day, starting December 1st, will display information and details about each days contributor. Disney aficionados can also subscribe via iTunes by searching for ‘MouseVent2011’. If you device doesn’t sync with iTunes you can also subscribe via our RSS feed at http://mousevent2011.podbean.com/feed/ and via Stitcher Smart Radio (Stitcher streams audio to mobile devices) check out their app.

Tip of the Week
Candy cane time again

If your holiday tradition includes a trip to Disneyland for one of its famous fresh-made candy canes, here are the dates and details you’ll need to start making plans for 2011. The first batch of fresh candy canes will be made at the Candy Palace on Main Street, U.S.A. on November 30. The candy cane schedule usually begins the day after Thanksgiving, but with an early holiday this year the park seems to be waiting a week, but adding an extra day in December. The full schedule is:
Wednesday, November 30
Friday, December 2
Tuesday, December 6
Friday, December 9
Monday, December 12
Friday, December 16
Wednesday, December 21

Last year the candy canes cost $9.95 each, and were limited to two per person. We expect pricing and limits to be similar this year. Disneyland usually makes two—sometimes three—batches a day, but the number of candy canes in each batch can vary based in temperature and humidity. The typical batch yields fewer than 90 canes. If Disneyland follows the normal operating pattern, tickets will be distributed at the Candy Palace at park opening each day, with the first batch of candy canes usually available to purchase about one hour after the official park opening time. The second and third batches are usually ready 90-minutes to two hours apart.
