Wednesday Photo Challenge 2-29-12 Answer

March 1, 2012 By Daniel Hale

11 participants, 11 correct answers. Probably would have been more if I had remembered to tweet the challenge. :/

I mean, clearly I overestimated the toughness of that picture. I expected silence or for at least one of you to say “Big Thunder”, but no. You guys know the illiterate scrawl of Brer Rabbit and his backwoods buddies when you see it.

I think I need to raise the level of difficulty of the photo challenge. When you see e-mail domain names like sorcerertink, and daysinthepark you figure out pretty fast that you’re not dealing with featherweight jobbers here.

Yes. The attraction I’m about to get a Fastpass for is:

Splash Mountain

Splash Mountain is one of those rides that I really like, but rarely go on.

I usually wear denim jeans. When denim jeans get wet… I’ll just use the word chafe, and let you fill in the blanks.

The last time I got on a water-ride with jeans on was years ago in Orlando. I figured, hey, it’s hot enough. It’ll dry fast.  I didn’t factor in the %$@#! humidity!

My wife (girlfriend at the time) also mostly wears jeans, and she made the same mistake in Orlando, thinking the same thing I did. The chafing torture was so bad for her that she went and bought new sweatpants and changed into them immediately.

Anyway… You all did great! Thank’s for taking a minute to play my little game!

This week’s winners are:

  • Angie Howatt
  • Chad Elliott
  • Kevin Healy
  • Rob
  • Elizabeth
  • Kayla
  • Lyndsey
  • Alex Hein
  • Robert Erickson
  • Alison Hodgson
  • Ashley Hodgson
I had you Hodgson ladies on the ropes for a minute there, but you came back swinging, didn’t you?

It won’t be so easy next time.

I have a new one lined up, so when you’re in the Disneyland Resort (Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, Downtown Disney and all of the Disney hotels), keep your eyes peeled and take in everything!

Don’t forget to come back on Monday for a new Magical Monday Audio Challenge! Bye for now! 😀

When I said I’d start you off with something easy, I honestly didn’t know it was that easy. I was warned. Daniel said that this first challenge was way too easy. But what do I know?

Anyway… everyone, and I mean everyone, who guessed was correct one way or another. I also think it’s a stretch to say that anybody “guessed”. You all answered with such swift and hard certainty. Some of you even loled at me!

Unlike the Photo Challenge where there is one correct answer, there will be times (like this one) in the Audio Challenge where more than one answer is correct. So if you answered: Splash Mountain or The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh or “The Winnie the Pooh Ride” (or any variation thereof) you were correct.

Those of you who answered Critter Country are very correct. Lol!

To capture this sound clip, I walked into Critter Country, past Splash Mountain, under the overpass for the Disneyland Railroad and then all the way to the back where you can hear the tail-end of  The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh.

As I said, NOBODY got this wrong, and I believe because so many knew without a doubt where this clip came from, our first Audio Challenge has already surpassed the Photo Challenge in the number of participants!

So thank you to all of the winners:

  • Rob
  • Robert Erickson
  • Melissa
  • LiLeopard
  • Kent Williams
  • Angie
  • Lillian Tadamichi
  • Ashley Hodgson
  • Chad Elliott
  • Lyndsey
  • Becca Lovato Hart
  • rosannaring
  • Chris Carpenter
  • Bunnyaimee
  • ComeCorrect1714
  • 1DizFanatic
  • Rowena Ebba
  • Rebecca Fernandez

Don’t get cocky though. This was just a warm up. It won’t be as easy next time. So if you happen to visit DLR before next Monday, keep your ears wide open.

Thank you all for participating ! I hope to see you all on the Wednesday Photo Challenge, and then next Monday for Audio Challenge #2 which I promise won’t be as big a cakewalk as this one was!

Hungry Bear Re-Opens with New Menu

March 17, 2011 By Daniel Hale

The Hungry Bear Restaurant has always had a special place in my heart.  Some of my earliest memories of going to Disneyland as a kid was going to the Hungry Bear.  Not so much for the food, but the atmosphere.  It feels like you're in the wilderness, and as you eat, the Mark Twain and the Columbia cruise by on the Rivers of America.  The Columbia shoots it's cannon right there and on the other side, the Disneyland Railroad goes by.  It's Disneyland at it's very best.

So I was very happy to learn that not only has Hungry Bear come back after weeks of rehab, but they have a brand new menu.  And it looks awesome!

Fried Green Tomato Sandwich

Some of the new additions to the menu include: an Angus 1/3-pound chili cheeseburger (or skip the chili and just go for the cheeseburger) topped with a fried onion ring, a yummy fried green tomato sandwich with jicama-mango slaw, crispy chicken sandwich with honey-mustard sauce and turkey and provolone on a multi-grain roll with basil mayo and a crisp slaw on the side.

Take a look at Big Al’s chicken salad with smoked chicken, lettuce, watermelon, candied pecans, dried cherries, pickled red onion and honey-lime vinaigrette (make it vegetarian and skip the chicken).

Big Al's Chicken Salad

For some reason I see Big Al eating the Chili Cheese Burger instead of a SALAD!

Make any meal a combo with sweet potato fries or fruit. And for Kids? Burgers with sweet potato fries or fruit; chicken breast nuggets with fruit; a “power pack” with string cheese, nonfat yogurt, sliced apples and whole-grain “fish” crackers; and mac and cheese.

Dessert?

Mini Blueberry Pie

Hunny Lemon Cupcakes

Thanks to the Disney Parks Blog for the images and details.

Disney Closes Critter Country

January 26, 2011 By Daniel Hale

From the OC Register:

Disneyland is set to shut down Critter Country for more than a month starting Wednesday (Today).

Crews already began refurbishing Splash Mountain and Hungry Bear Restaurant, two major features in the land in the northwest corner of the park, earlier this month.

Disney decided to close the rest of Critter Country while work is ongoing, said Suzi Brown, a Disneyland Resort spokeswoman. Click on the photo to see Critter Country features and other attractions that are undergoing refurbishments this month.

“Closing the remainder of the land allows us to be more efficient and to perform refresh work that was originally scheduled for later in the year,” Brown said in a statement.

Other parts of Critter Country include The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh ride and Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes, as well as a few shops and food locations. Winnie the Pooh and other characters often greet visitors in Critter Country.

All features, except Splash Mountain, are set to reopen in March, Brown said.

Splash Mountain is scheduled to undergo renovations through May 26.
