Did You Know THIS About the Matterhorn?

December 13, 2011 By Daniel Hale

Did you know these facts about the Matterhorn? I did.. Thanks to the Disney Parks Blog for making me feel vindicated.

Here is what they posted today:

Winter is here, and some of you may be hearing the swish-swish of skis sliding down a snow-covered mountain – even if only in your head. Here at the Disneyland Resort, we’ve got our own mountain range, of course, which started with the Matterhorn. Here are some things you might not know about this monument to Alpine adventure:

  • A Disneyland icon since 1959, the Matterhorn was part of the first major expansion to take place at Disneyland park since the park’s debut in 1955. The Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction opened on June 14, 1959, along with the Disneyland Monorail and the Submarine Voyage.
  • The Matterhorn Bobsleds was the first roller coaster in the world to employ a tubular steel track and an electronic dispatch system which enabled more than one car at a time to be on the track.
  • The Disneyland Matterhorn was built to 1/100th scale of the original Matterhorn, or 147 feet versus the 14,700 feet of the original.
  • The Matterhorn has been the highest point in Disneyland park since 1959. It is the second-highest point in the Disneyland Resort, behind the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure park which stands 183 feet tall.
  • The attraction was inspired by the live-action Disney adventure film, “Third Man on the Mountain,” which starred James MacArthur and Michael Rennie as mountaineers. The movie was filmed in Switzerland, on and around the real Matterhorn.
  • Guests who look quickly while whizzing through the Matterhorn caverns may spot mountaineering supplies and other evidence of the “Wells Expedition.” These scenic details are a tribute to the late Frank Wells, who was president and Chief Operating Officer of The Walt Disney Company from 1984 until his death in 1994. Wells was an experienced mountain climber and skier.

Ghirardelli is Coming to Disney California Adventure Park

December 2, 2011 By Daniel Hale

Straight from the Disney Parks Blog:

I’m so excited to let you know that there will soon be a new place to satisfy your sweet tooth at the Disneyland Resort. In late spring 2012, a new Ghirardelli location will open at the Pacific Wharf area, inside Disney California Adventure park!

The soda fountain and chocolate shop, similar to the location at Downtown Disney in the Walt Disney World Resort – which has been a must-do for me (and many of you, I’m sure) for 13 years – will feature Ghirardelli’s world-famous hot fudge sundaes and chocolate products. And each guest will be able to receive complimentary samples of their signature Ghirardelli Squares chocolate!

You can find out more about Ghirardelli – their chocolate treats, products and gifts – by checking out their Facebook page. (http://www.facebook.com/Ghirardelli)

I know I’ll be counting down the days until I can get my Ghirardelli hot fudge sundae! Who’s with me?

Wednesday Photo Challenge Answer: Fixin’ To Do Some FANTASMIC!

November 24, 2011 By Daniel Hale

Every Wednesday we test your DLR knowledge with a photograph taken somewhere in the Disneyland Resort.  Usually I wait a day and give you the answer on Thursday, but seeing as this Thursday is Thanksgiving and I’ll be up early in the morning, then driving to Las Vegas to my in-laws, then cooking the dinner, then eating it and then passing out full of Turkey and other foodie goodness, I’ll just give you the answer now. Here’s tis:

The Sailing ship Columbia is taken out of service because Captain Hook and his pirates commandeer it to perform in Fantasmic!. It’s pretty cool.

First they make sure everyone who sat in front of The Rivers of America are still awake by firing a concussive blast from a cannon (which always gives me a start, even when I know it’s coming).

Hook, Smee, Peter Pan, Wendy, and pirates are running around the deck in this little fight/stunt sequence as the ship makes its pass.

Following the ship is that crocodile the wants to finish off what he started with Capt. Hook’s hand, with the sound of a ticking clock emanating from its tail.

The Steam Ship Mark Twain is also pulled to the sideline to perform in the Fantasmic! finale, piloted by a black and white Mickey Mouse, dressed in attire from Steamboat Willie.

About 50 Disney characters dance on the ship in a ribbon routine. The sequence is accompanied by searchlights, fountains, and pyrotechnics. Pretty awesome stuff.

We had more guesses than usual this time, and everyone was right! Lol!

We’ll have a new one for you next week, so when you’re in the Disneyland Resort (Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, Downtown Disney and all of the Disney hotels), keep your eyes peeled and take in everything.
